Student films to be screened in Digital Cinema Contest

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Filmmakers who produced winning entries in the Digital Learning Collaboratory's seventh annual Digital Cinema Contest will be honored Thursday (April 23) at the Lafayette Theater.

The 7 p.m. event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be for sale. The winning short films, created by Purdue students, will be shown. Awards will be given for the best film in each of four categories - alternative, animation, documentary and narrative - as well as for director, actor/actress, score, cinematography, original story and special features, plus a viewer's choice. A faculty panel is judging the films.

Prizes include food, video production hardware and software, and cash for the top finishers.

"We're very pleased by the response to this year's contest," said Kevin O'Shea, contest organizer and coordinator of the Digital Learning Collaboratory. "Many students completed their entries as part of a class project this year, which supports the DLC's mission of supporting instruction through technology."

In addition to the awards ceremony, a sneak preview of Purdue alumnus Tyler Kupferer's newest short film, "Duck <3 Teslacoil," will be shown at the awards ceremony. Kupferer is a former Digital Cinema Contest winner and is currently studying for his master's degree in film and television at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

O'Shea cautions that the films have not been rated and advises viewer discretion. The films may contain adult language and violence.

Seventeen short films were screened last week and winners chosen by a faculty panel. Most of the films are posted on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com) with the tag "dcc09."

The Lafayette Theater is at 600 Main St.
