April 21, 2009 Workshop gives participants hands-on experience with tree evaluationWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Ever wondered how a tree's quality is determined or the grade of a log is found? Find out May 5 and 6 at the Hardwood Log, Lumber and Tree Grading Workshop at the Southern-Indiana Purdue Agriculture Center in Jasper."This workshop is intended to give people a better appreciation of standing timber value," said Dan Cassens, Purdue professor of forestry and natural resources. The May 5 session runs from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and includes talks on the fundamentals of hardwood lumber, log and tree grading; log and tree values; and cutting of study trees. The May 6 session runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and provides attendees with an opportunity to put into practice what they learned the previous day. The study trees will be sawed into lumber and a market value applied to that lumber "When it comes time to decide which trees we cut down, the class gets to pick," Cassens said. The workshop fee is $150, and registration can be completed by contacting Cassens at 765- 494-3644. In addition to the May 5-6 workshop, a Hardwood Lumber Grading and Manufacturing Workshop is scheduled for May 7 at the Jasper Inn. "The workshop will focus on the grading of lumber and review of the National Hardwood Lumber Association grading rules," Cassens said. The one-day event is geared toward people who handle, buy or sell lumber. The cost to attend is $95 and registration can also be completed by contacting Cassens.
