Hassanein named head of nuclear engineering

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Ahmed Hassanein, the Paul L. Wattelet professor of nuclear engineering at Purdue University, has been named head of the School of Nuclear Engineering.

The appointment is effective July 1, said Leah Jamieson, the John A. Edwardson dean of engineering.

Hassanein, who joined the Purdue faculty in 2007, has more than 25 years of experience in nuclear engineering and material science research and development. Before coming to Purdue, he was a senior scientist and director of the fusion power program at the Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory. He holds five degrees, including three master's degrees and a doctorate, in nuclear engineering and physics.

Hassanein is recognized as one of the world's foremost experts in modeling materials response to different radiation sources. He has developed unique models and comprehensive computer packages to predict material behavior, lifetime issues, plasma evolution and fluid hydrodynamics under various irradiation conditions. The models are used in national and international research fields.

He holds patents in advanced lithography and high-energy physics applications.

George Wodicka, head of the School of Biomedical Engineering, chaired the search committee.
