College of Technology at New Albany holds event for high school counselors

NEW ALBANY, Ind. - High school guidance counselors from the southeast Indiana area will gather at Purdue College of Technology at New Albany for the first-ever Day in College event created especially for them.

The event will be 7-10 a.m. April 17 at the New Albany location at the Purdue Technology Center of Southeast Indiana on Charlestown Road just southeast of I-265. Counselors from Borden, Eastern, Floyd Central, Henryville, Jeffersonville, New Albany, North Harrison, Providence, Silver Creek, and Oldham County (Ky.) high schools will attend.

Attendees will be served breakfast and will receive information about courses and majors available at the location. Counselors will spend 15 minutes in a class from each of the five majors offered at Purdue in New Albany. They also will tour the building and have the opportunity to see the laboratories, and classrooms available at the building, which opened last fall.

Andy Schaffer, director of the Purdue College of Technology at New Albany, said the purpose of the event is to allow counselors to see firsthand the kind of courses and facilities available to students who choose to attend there.

"We are proud of our new facility and want to make sure that those who guide students in their career path know what we have to offer," he said. "Students in this part of the state may not want to travel to West Lafayette to attend college, but we want to get the word out that earning the same Purdue degree is possible for them right where they live."

The laboratory facilities at the Purdue Technology Center of Southeast Indiana include the Paul W. Ogle Electrical Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology Laboratories and a computer graphics laboratory created through a gift from the Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County.

Purdue's College of Technology at New Albany offers bachelor's degrees in computer graphics technology, electrical engineering technology, industrial technology, mechanical engineering technology, and organizational leadership and supervision. Through a reciprocal tuition agreement, residents of Jefferson, Oldham, Bullitt and Trimble counties in Kentucky pay Indiana in-state rates at the college's New Albany location.
