'Greentailing' topic of author's talk at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Willard Ander, author and retailing expert, will speak about green trends in retailing April 16 at Purdue University.

The 7 p.m. presentation in Matthews Hall, Room 210, is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the consumer sciences and retailing department of the College of Consumer and Family Sciences.

Ander and Neil Z. Stern are co-authors of the book "Greentailing and Other Revolutions in Retail." The book examines the growing green, or environmental, trend in retailing, which is called greentailing. The authors explain how retailers and manufacturers can implement greentailing ideas to raise profits, using case studies from successful greentailers.

The book, a follow-up to the authors' first book, "Winning at Retail," also looks at how demographic shifts provide retail opportunities; the growth of experiential retailing and non-store retailing; how to sell services, not just products; and brands going retail.

Ander is a senior partner with McMillan/Doolittle, a Chicago-based retail consulting firm.  He specializes in strategic planning, new concept development and assessment, and best practices identification and evaluation. Some of his clients have included McDonald's, Best Buy, Sears, Radio Shack, Lowe's, Allstate, Procter & Gamble, Eddie Bauer, T-Mobile, DuPont, Harley-Davidson and Staples.

Prior to joining McMillan/Doolittle, Ander held several management and executive positions at Montgomery Ward and Foley's Department Stores in business development, research and planning, distribution and store operations.

A former assistant professor at the University of Houston, he is a graduate of Stanford University.
