Liberal Arts students build healthier communities

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Students in Purdue University's College of Liberal Arts are helping the community with a variety of healthy outreach efforts, including improving veterans' residences, offering Spanish translation services in medical settings and educating motorists about motorcycle safety.

The 2009 Community Building program is offered through the College of Liberal Arts engagement office, and it funds six classes and two programs that focus on building healthy communities.

In one of the classes, "Interior Design at Veterans' Home," students design living spaces at the Indiana Veterans' Home to enhance the residential environment, says Laura Bittner, continuing lecturer of visual and performing arts.

"The students researched the generations and wars related to the home's current veterans, as well as health and safety needs for long-term care and independent living," Bittner says.

There are 37 students in three class sections working on this project, and each class will propose a plan to the residents and Veterans' Home administration.

The other supported courses and programs are:

* "Designing and Implementing Health Campaigns," Marifran Mattson, associate professor of communication.

* "Introduction to Translation and Interpretation in Spanish," Cecilia Tenorio, continuing lecturer for foreign languages and literatures.

* "Teaching Health and Safety in Middle and Junior High Schools," Adam E. Barry, assistant professor of health and kinesiology.

* "Issues in African American Studies: American Health," Titilayo A. Okoror, assistant professor in African American studies.

* "Clinical Practice in Audiology," Lata Krishnan, clinical associate professor of speech, language and hearing sciences.

* FAVORS/CAPSTONE course, Patricia Hart, professor of foreign languages and literatures and director of film and video studies.

* Pete's Pals, Susan Flynn, clinical association professor of health and kinesiology.
