Pulitzer prize-winning and former U.S. poet laureate Rita Dove is the featured speaker for the 78th annual Literary Awards on April 15 in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall.

The 8 p.m. event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Department of English, Purdue Libraries, the College of Liberal Arts and the Black Cultural Center.

Prior to Dove's reading, Literary Awards recipients will be honored at a banquet at 5:30 p.m. in Purdue Memorial Union's North Ballroom. The Literary Awards contest features more than 70 awards, totaling more than $10,000 in prize money, for Purdue and Indiana high school students.

Dove also will speak at the banquet about the writing process. Tickets for the banquet are $15 for students and $25 for non-students, and they can be purchased in Heavilon Hall, Room 324, or by calling the English department at 765-494-3740. April 10 is the last day to buy tickets.

The ticket price includes a pre-dinner reception, banquet dinner, the awards ceremony, Dove's talk on the creative process and reserved seating for Dove's reading in Fowler Hall. The pre-dinner reception is 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Purdue Memorial Union, Anniversary Drawing Room.

Dove, a Commonwealth Professor of English at the University of Virginia, served as U.S. poet laureate and consultant to the Library of Congress from 1993 to 1995. She also was poet laureate of Virginia from 2004 to 2006. She received the 1987 Pulitzer Prize in poetry for "Thomas and Beulah," a collection of interrelated poems loosely based on her grandparents' lives.

She is the author of the poetry collections "American Smooth," "Mother Love" and "Grace Notes." Her latest book of poems, "Sonata Mulattica," will be published in April.

She also is the recipient of the Duke Ellington Lifetime Achievement Award, the Heinz Award in the Arts and Humanities, the National Humanities Medal, and the Commonwealth Award of Distinguished Service.
