Comic book artists reveal their 'Secret Identities' with Purdue visit
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A group of comic book artists and writers, including former West Lafayette resident Bernard Chang, will visit Purdue University on March 30 as part of the "Secret Identities" book tour.The 7:30 p.m. event at Stewart Center's Fowler Hall, will feature a book discussion, interactive presentation and book signing. Chang, who lived in West Lafayette from 1978-82 when his father was a Purdue professor, is an artist for "Iron Man" and "Wonder Woman." In addition to Chang, "Secret Identities" editors Jeff Yang, Parry Shen and Keith Chow will make presentations. The event is free and open to the public.
"Secret Identities" uses characteristics of superhero comic books to expose the real face of the Asian-American experience, usually hidden behind the mask of misperception and stereotype, says Patrocinio Schweickart, professor of English and women's studies and interim chair of Asian American studies.
"Secret Identities" will be published by The New Press in April. The collection features top Asian-American writers, artists and comic professionals who collaborated to create 26 original stories centered around Asian-American superheroes. The original graphical short stories in "Secret Identities" are set throughout American history, from the building of the railroads to the Japanese American internment, atomic bombings, the Vietnam airlift, the murder of Vincent Chin and the incarceration of Wen Ho Lee.
The event is sponsored by the Council on Asian American Studies, the Department of English, the Asian Studies program, the Women's studies program, the Division of Art and Design of the Patti and Rusty Rueff Department of Visual and Performing Arts, and the Asian American Network of Indiana.
