March 19, 2009 Indiana commerce chief to speak at Purdue manufacturing summitWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
E. Mitchell "Mitch" Roob Jr., who was named commerce secretary in January after overseeing Indiana's Family and Social Services Administration since 2005, will discuss manufacturing's role in leading Indiana out of the recession and how to create a business climate that encourages sustainable manufacturing. His talk is at 9:30 a.m. in Purdue's Stewart Center. More than 200 attendees from across the Midwest are expected to attend the summit, which is hosted by Discovery Park's Center for Advanced Manufacturing. The summit, titled The Economic and Environmental Benefits of Sustainable Manufacturing, runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public. To register, go to https://www.purdue.edu/dp/amap/ During his stint at the Family and Social Services Administration, Roob led implementation of Gov. Mitch Daniels' Healthy Indiana Plan, which now provides 40,000 low-income Hoosiers with health insurance, and he led the privatization of the state's welfare eligibility system. A 1983 graduate of DePauw University with an MBA from the University of Notre Dame, Roob also served as director of the Indianapolis Department of Transportation, where he organized the city's Building Better Neighborhoods infrastructure program and worked with Daniels, then-chairman of the Competition Initiative, to spearhead the promotion of public/private partnerships.
