Indiana's secretary of commerce and chief executive of the Indiana Economic Development Corp. will be the keynote speaker at Purdue's eighth annual Advancing Manufacturing Summit on Wednesday (March 25), coinciding with Indiana Manufacturing Week.

E. Mitchell "Mitch" Roob Jr., who was named commerce secretary in January after overseeing Indiana's Family and Social Services Administration since 2005, will discuss manufacturing's role in leading Indiana out of the recession and how to create a business climate that encourages sustainable manufacturing. His talk is at 9:30 a.m. in Purdue's Stewart Center.

More than 200 attendees from across the Midwest are expected to attend the summit, which is hosted by Discovery Park's Center for Advanced Manufacturing. The summit, titled The Economic and Environmental Benefits of Sustainable Manufacturing, runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public. During his stint at the Family and Social Services Administration, Roob led implementation of Gov. Mitch Daniels' Healthy Indiana Plan, which now provides 40,000 low-income Hoosiers with health insurance, and he led the privatization of the state's welfare eligibility system.

A 1983 graduate of DePauw University with an MBA from the University of Notre Dame, Roob also served as director of the Indianapolis Department of Transportation, where he organized the city's Building Better Neighborhoods infrastructure program and worked with Daniels, then-chairman of the Competition Initiative, to spearhead the promotion of public/private partnerships.

In addition to Purdue's Center for Advanced Manufacturing, summit sponsors include the Access Technology Across Indiana Network (ATAIN), Barnes & Thornburg LLP and Rolls-Royce Corp. Conexus Indiana, the Indiana Manufacturing Extension Partnership and Purdue's Technical Assistance Program also have provided support for the summit.
