STOMP, an internationally known percussion performance stage show, is making its return to Purdue with two shows at 7 p.m. on March 31 and April 1 in Elliott Hall of Music.

The concerts, which are presented by Purdue Convocations, are recommended for adults and children age 6 and up.

STOMP's eight-member troupe uses everything but conventional percussion instruments - including matchboxes, garbage cans, plastic bags, plungers, boots and hubcaps - to fill the stage with rhythms. Stiff-bristle brooms become a sweeping orchestra; Zippo lighters flip open and closed to create a fiery fugue; and wooden poles thump and clack in a rhythmic explosion.

From its beginnings as a street performance in the UK, STOMP has grown into an international sensation during the past 14 years, having performed in more than 350 cities in 36 countries worldwide, said Abby Eddy, director of marketing for Purdue Convocations. STOMP continues its run with the ongoing sell-out off-Broadway production at New York's Orpheum Theatre, a North American tour and two productions overseas - a London company and a European tour. A production in Las Vegas from STOMP's creators, STOMP OUT LOUD, is now playing at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

Since the last performance of the show at Purdue in 2002, STOMP has evolved and now includes some surprises, Eddy said. Some sections of the show have been updated, and two new full-scale routines, which employ props such as tractor tire inner tubes and paint cans, have been added.

In addition to the stage performances, two other STOMP events will be offered on campus.

At noon on March 31, the Recreational Sports Center will offer a STOMP medium-impact body percussion class. It is open to RSC members.

From 10-11 p.m. March 31, students are welcome to mingle with STOMP performers during a cast party at Harrison Grille. Students also can sample free food compliments of the Harrison Grille.

Tickets are $20 to $45 for adults and $20 to $32 for those 18 years and younger, Purdue students and Ivy Tech Lafayette students. Tickets are available at the Elliott Hall and Stewart Center box offices at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. Tickets also are available through Ticketmaster outlets. Discounted tickets for groups of 10 or more can be ordered at (765) 496-1977.
