March 5, 2009 Design students place in international competitionWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -Nora Flood, a junior in the College of Liberal Arts from Grapevine, Texas, received $2,400 for her first-place design Escape, a ladder that uses the window frame for support rather than hooking onto the windowsill. She also will receive an all-expense paid trip to the association's show in Chicago on March 22-24 to display a protoype of her product. Escape is easy to use and repack, allowing homeowners to practice with it before an emergency arises. In addition, Escape is compact and easy to store, and solves a number of issues that arise with traditional fire escape ladders.
Contest entries for the International Housewares Association address real life issues with product concepts that help people with physical limitations or those in traumatic situations. Two Purdue students, Darius Kamran, a junior from Indianapolis, and Jordan R. Bailey, a junior from Noblesville, Ind., also received honorable mentions and individual $250 cash awards. Kamran designed the Revo, a fuel container that focuses on safety as its main function because it can be stored in a family environment and boasts an innovative seal and childproof system. Bailey created the Bru Coffee Maker. The three students are studying industrial design in the Patti and Rusty Rueff Department of Visual and Performing Arts. The jury was composed of designers from the association's member companies, design consultants and two educators. International Housewares Association also gave Purdue $425 to support their design programs.
