March 5, 2009 Symphonic Band does 'ImPERCYnations' of Grainger on March 8WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Original works and parodies of Australian composer Percy Grainger's works will be featured Sunday (March 8) during a Purdue Bands performance.The free 2:30 p.m. concert in Elliott Hall of Music will feature the Purdue Symphonic Band, directed by Jay Gephart, and the Purdue Concert Band, directed by Max Jones. The Purdue Symphonic Band will perform "Lincolnshire Posey," which was conceived and scored for wind bands early in 1937. Each of the six movements of the piece represents a different song with its own story. The group also will perform "No. 3 Father and Daughter" from Grainger's "Three Tragic Ballads" and "ImPERCYnations," the concert's title piece written by contemporary composer Steven Bryant. On another piece, the first movement of Edvard Grieg's "Concerto in A minor," graduate student and pianist Evan Dawley will be highlighted. The Purdue Concert Band will open its section of the performance with "Through Countless Halls of Air" by Francis McBeth. Clifton Williams, a composer and teacher who helped shape McBeth's career, will be represented on the program by "Dramatic Essay," which will feature graduate student Todd Ward in a trumpet solo. The group also will perform "The Mall of America" by David Bobrowitz and "Danza No. 2" by Bruce Yurko. These bands will next be heard in concert at the Purdue Bands' Showcase on April 24.
