Galleries exhibition to highlight intersection of gardens, machines

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - An exhibition examining nature and technology in American suburbs will be on display from Feb. 16-26 in the Patti and Rusty Rueff East Gallery in the Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts at Purdue.

The exhibition, "Gardens and Machines: The Suburban Life," features the work of five students who are enrolled in an art and design course taught by Shannon McMullen, an assistant professor in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. The participating students include Micah Bowers, John Cessna, Michael Jamison, Aaron Nemec and Juan Obando.

In the graduate studio course, the students focused on sites where negotiations between the machine and the garden are occurring, such as brown fields, suburbia, climate change and new developments in science and engineering, McMullen said. The resulting projects are wide-ranging in both choice of medium and topic.

Another exhibition in the Patti and Rusty Rueff West Gallery will feature the work of Andrea Dailey, a master's of fine arts student. Her work, which will be on display from Feb. 23-27, is a photographic documentation of how young women, influenced by social standards, construct their identity through appearance alterations, creation of personas and masking.

A reception for Dailey's work will be from 6-8 p.m. Feb. 25 in the East Gallery, and a Brown Bag Lecture will be offered at noon Feb. 24 in the gallery.

Both galleries are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Gallery exhibits are free and open to the public.
