Joint symposium for beef, dairy and forage industries

"The multi-sponsorship permits acquiring speakers of joint interest and is more cost effective for vendors to participate at one event rather than several smaller events," said Keith Johnson, Purdue Extension forage specialist.

Purdue speakers include Dennis Buckmaster, associate professor in agricultural and biological engineering, who will speak on how to reduce forage loss from harvest through storage. Allen Bridges, Purdue Extension specialist in reproduction, will talk on beef reproduction and Johnson will participate on a forage panel discussion.

On Feb. 27 the keynote speaker will be Andrew McCrea, a rancher from northwest Missouri, who will compare his broadcasting experience to being a farmer and share his insights. McCrea has a global perspective on factors affecting producers and will talk about his travels.

On Feb. 28 the keynote speaker will be Temple Grandin, associate professor of animal science at Colorado State University, who designed the center track restrainer system for meat plants. Grandin also has written on animal behavior, how to reduce stress in animals during handling and animal welfare.

Other topics include a beef checkoff update, how to reduce forage loss after storage, expectations of a soil fertility program, managing the dairy business with increasing profit variability, and many more. The trade show will be 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Feb. 27.
