February 9, 2009 'Miles From Nowhere' author to speak at PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Nami Mun, the author of "Miles From Nowhere," will speak on Feb. 26 at Purdue University.The talk, which is free and open to the public, is at 7:30 p.m. in the Krannert Auditorium. The talk is presented by the Department of English and Sycamore Review, which is Purdue's nationally recognized journal of literature, opinion and arts. Mun's fiction debut, "Miles From Nowhere," was published in December 2008. The novel tells the story of Joon, a 13-year-old Korean-American girl who flees her dysfunctional family to live on the streets in New York City. The story is about her experiences with homelessness, addiction and mental illness. Mun was born in Seoul, South Korea. She also lived in the Bronx and Los Angeles. A graduate of University of California, Berkeley, she received her master's of fine arts from the University of Michigan, where she earned a Hopwood Award for fiction and the Farrar Prize for Drama. She continues to teach English and creative writing at the University of Michigan, and recently accepted a teaching position at Columbia College Chicago.
