Science leadership meeting targets Latino, Native American students

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Latinos and Native Americans in Science will hold its inaugural Midwest regional meeting Feb. 21 at Purdue University.

The meeting, open to Midwest high school, undergraduate and graduate students, will be held from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Stewart Center, Rooms 214A-D. The meeting, organized by the society's Purdue student chapter, will bring chapter members, high school teachers and students together to provide leadership development for the society, strengthen its presence in the Midwest, educate Latino and Native American students about opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields and exchange ideas.

Sessions will include pre-college activities, chapter development and leadership and conversation tables. A continental breakfast, lunch, snacks and meeting materials are being provided by the society's national office, Purdue Latino Cultural Center, J.P. Morgan Chase and Proctor & Gamble.

The event is free but is limited to 100 participants and registration is required. Participants can register online at https://www.purdue.edu/lcc/sacnas.

"We hope to establish this meeting as a precedent upon which SACNAS chapters across the nation can base their efforts to encourage the dreams of aspiring scientists and mathematicians within our communities," said Kermin J. Martinez-Hernandez, vice president of Purdue's student chapter and member of the society's national board of directors.
