'Seussical' to bring beloved storybook characters to Purdue stage

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Dr. Seuss's best-loved stories, including "Horton Hears a Who" and "The Cat in the Hat," will come together in "Seussical" at 7 p.m. Feb. 13 in Purdue Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse.

The production, a musical staged by Theatreworks USA, is presented by Purdue Convocations as part of the Family Adventures series. It is recommended for children ages 4 to 10. The evening includes a special pre-show petting zoo featuring animals from the Columbian Park Zoo starting at 6 p.m. in the Stewart Center West Lobby.

When Horton the elephant discovers a magical world on a speck of dust, the wild ride begins. The Cat in the Hat is the host and emcee - and all-around mischief-maker - of this romp through the Seuss classics, which is specially adapted from the Broadway version for young audiences, said Abby Eddy, director of marketing for Purdue Convocations. An all-star cast of Seuss characters, including Miss Gertrude McFuzz and Mayzie La Bird, embark on a crazy adventure where the power of imagination and the most miraculous "think" ever save the day, Eddy said.

Theatreworks USA is America's largest and most prolific professional not-for-profit theater for young and family audiences, touring approximately 16 shows every year from its repertoire of 110 plays and musicals.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $12 for those 18 years and younger, Purdue students and Ivy Tech Lafayette students. Limited tickets are available at the Elliott Hall and Stewart Center box offices at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. Tickets also are available through Ticketmaster outlets. Discounted tickets for groups of 10 or more can be ordered at (765) 496-1977.
