January 23, 2009 Appointments, honors and activities• Appointments and promotions— David Radcliffe has been named associate head of the School of Engineering Education in the College of Engineering. He is epistemology professor of engineering education and chair of the graduate program. His research interests include interdisciplinary research methods in engineering education, design thinking and engineering knowledge creation, engineering design and design management in industry, sustainable systems design, and professional formation of engineers in practice. He is the School of Engineering Education's first associate head. — Erin Gildersleeve was recently named stewardship manager in the University Development Office. She received a bachelor's degree in finance from Ball State University in 2000 and was a retail sales representative at The Hershey Co. before coming to Purdue. • Faculty and staff honors — E. Dan Hirleman, the William E. and Florence E. Perry Head of the School of Mechanical Engineering, has been invited to be a delegate to the U.S.-Islamic World Forum Feb. 13-16 in Doha, Qatar. Hirleman will participate in the Science and Technology Leaders Workshop. — Lefteri H. Tsoukalas, a professor of nuclear engineering, has been named a recipient of the Humboldt Research Award from Germany's Humboldt Foundation. The foundation gives up to 100 research awards each year to encourage academic cooperation between scientists and scholars from abroad and in Germany. The award, which recognizes Tsoukalas's research and teaching accomplishments, comes with 60,000 euros (about $77,000) and the opportunity to work with counterparts in Germany. • Student honors — Interim Chief Justice Derek Michtich was recently sworn in as the new chief justice of the Purdue Student Government. He has been involved in the organization since his freshman year when he was appointed as an investigator. Michtich of Harrisburg, Penn., is a senior majoring in accounting and management with a minor in finance.
