Baroque Band changes program for Purdue performance

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Baroque Band, Chicago's first and only period-instrument orchestra, will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 24) in the Purdue Memorial Union South Ballroom.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, countertenor David Hansen, who was scheduled to perform, is unable to make the trip from Australia and will not be part of Saturday's program.

The new program is titled "Mr. Handel's Musical Journey," which is inspired by Handel's musical travels and influences, as the Baroque Band takes an 18th century tour around Italy, Germany and England.

The program will feature music by Handel's lifelong friend and correspondent, Telemann, and works by Vivaldi, Torelli, Purcell and Blow. The performance also will include a rare work by English composer Capel Bond, who directed the first Birmingham performance of Handel's "Messiah," and a version of Handel's "Water Music" that was arranged for a performance at London's well-known Vauxhall Gardens.

"The Purdue Memorial Union South Ballroom, with its resonant acoustics, will serve as an ideal location for this performance," said Abby Eddy, director of marketing for Purdue Convocations. Beverage service will complete the setting.

A pre-show discussion with artistic director Garry Clarke will take place at 7 p.m. in Purdue Memorial Union, Room 118.

Established in 2007 as Chicago's first period-instrument orchestra, the Baroque Band is known for its high artistic standards and compelling programs. It has already joined the city's elite circle of musical organizations, Eddy said.

Seating will be general admission. Tickets are $26 for adults and $16 for those 18 years and younger, Purdue students and Ivy Tech Lafayette students. Tickets are available at the Elliott Hall and Stewart Center box offices at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. Tickets also are available through Ticketmaster outlets. Discounted tickets for groups of 10 or more can be ordered at (765) 496-1977.
