Purdue jazz bands to offer swinging holiday sounds

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University's three jazz bands will come together at 8 p.m. Friday (Dec. 12) for the "Holiday Cheer & All That Jazz" concert, which will feature big band seasonal standards.

The concert will feature the Purdue Jazz Band, American Music Repertory Ensemble and the Lab Jazz Band and will take place in Purdue Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. Admission is free.

"Tuba Christmas," an annual event where tuba and euphonium players offer low brass versions of holiday tunes, will precede the concert. The free concert begins at 7 p.m. in the Stewart Center lobby.

M.T. "Mo" Trout will direct all three bands in swing-oriented versions of holiday tunes, including the "Glenn Miller Yuletide Medley," Irving Berlin's "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm," Frank Loesser's "Baby, It's Cold Outside" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas."

The concert also will include "Mele Kalikimaka," "The Little Drummer Boy," "Jingle Bells," "Yo Tannenbaum" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen."

"Holiday Cheer & All That Jazz" is the last jazz concert of the Purdue Bands & Orchestra fall 2008 season. For information on the January 2009 Purdue Jazz Festival or other upcoming jazz events, visit https://www.purdue.edu/bands
