Purdue Theatre to present 'The Ministry of Funny Noises'

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue's Division of Theatre will present a 7:30 p.m. concert Saturday (Dec. 13) featuring The Ministry of Funny Noises in the Carole and Gordon Mallett Theatre in the Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, will highlight Brad Garton, a Purdue alumnus and former member of the punk rock band Dow Jones and the Industrials that became an underground sensation in the area from 1979-81. Gregory Taylor also will be featured.

Crazy People, a group of Purdue students who have spent the semester learning to make funny and interesting noises armed only with a computer, will open the concert.

Garton is the director of the Computing Music Center at Columbia University in New York City and has assisted in establishing and developing a number of computer music studios throughout the world. He formerly served on the board of directors of the International Computer Music Association and artistic director/co-organizer of several festivals and conferences on new computer music.

Taylor has worked as a visual artist, contemporary audio radio program host and recording artist, and has written for several publications including Wired magazine. He works for the new media software company Cycling '74, which makes the Max/MSP/Jitter software.

Following the concert, Garton and Taylor will meet informally with audience members to talk about their careers and the computer music industry.
