Purdue Indian students mourn lives lost in Mumbai

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Indian graduate students at Purdue University are arranging a memorial march at 6 p.m. Friday (Dec. 5) to mourn the lives lost in the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

The march will begin at the atrium of the Materials Science and Electrical Engineering Building and end at the Memorial Mall, said Gauri Joshi, president of the Indian Graduate Students at Purdue.

Those who attend the march will light candles at the beginning of the event to remember those who died in the terrorist attacks, Joshi said.

"We will honor members of the Mumbai police force, the Indian Army, National Security Guard commandos, the Rapid Action Force and the Indian Navy who fought bravely and sacrificed their lives to protect the people of Mumbai," Joshi said. "Further, we will express solidarity with the citizens back home and make a united stand against terrorism."

Joshi, a graduate student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was born and raised in Pune, a city located about a hundred miles southeast of Mumbai.

More than 171 people, including six Americans, were killed, and scores of others wounded in the terrorist attacks in Mumbai last week. The three-day assault, which started Nov. 26, claimed lives at multiple locations, including two luxury hotels, a railway station, a Jewish center and a restaurant popular with foreign tourists.

Indian students are the largest international student group at Purdue. This semester, 1,310 students from India are attending Purdue.
