Educators to discuss issues involving English language learners

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Issues facing future teachers, including the No Child Left Behind Act, standardized testing and school funding, will be part of a Dec. 11 discussion at Purdue University featuring a panel of local education experts.

The discussion, titled "Today's Issues for Future Teachers: Education, Language and Legislation," will be at 7 p.m. in Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry, Room 200. Students from "Teaching English as a New Language," a College of Education course in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, have organized the panel.

"This is a student-initiated event for which the students have made the arrangements and prepared the questions for the panelists," said Susan J. Britsch, professor of curriculum and instruction and coordinator for the course.

The panel includes Indiana State Rep. Sheila Klinker, an outreach liaison with the College of Education; Ed Eiler, superintendent of Lafayette School Corp.; and Olivia Rothenberger, English as Second Language director for Community Schools of Frankfort.
