Purdue's Sigma Xi presents talks on marine ecosystems, molecular physiology of control of body weight

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The director of the Fisheries Centre at the University of British Columbia will talk about "major trends in marine ecosystems" Nov. 24 in the Deans Auditorium of Purdue University's Pfendler Hall.

The 7 p.m. presentation by Daniel Pauly, which is free and open to the public, is part of the Purdue chapter of Sigma Xi's series of distinguished lectures on climate change and global sustainability.

The Purdue chapter of Sigma Xi, a national research society, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

Pauly, a French citizen, is principal investigator of the Sea Around Us project, which studies, documents and promotes policies to minimize the impact of fisheries on the world's marine ecosystems.

The concepts, methods and software Pauly helped develop are documented in more than 500 publications and used around the world, including the Ecopath modeling approach and software (www.ecopath.org), and FishBase, an online encyclopedia of fish (https://www.fishbase.org).

In addition to Sigma Xi, other sponsors of the talk are the Office of the Provost, the departments of Biological Sciences and Forestry and Natural Resources, the Center for the Environment and the Purdue Climate Change Research Center.

Sigma Xi and the Ingestive Behavior Research Center also will sponsor a talk titled "molecular physiology of the control of body weight" by Rudolph Leibel from 4-5 p.m. Nov. 20 in Fowler Hall. Leibel is a professor of pediatrics and medicine at Columbia University and co-director of the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center and the Russ Berrie Medical Sciences Pavilion in New York City. The talk, part of a distinguished lecture series, is free and open to the public. There will be a reception for Leibel in the Stewart Center Gallery, Stewart Center Room 157, following the talk.
