November 5, 2008 Purdue names Shipley interim VP for business servicesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue comptroller John Shipley has been named interim vice president for business services and assistant treasurer, the university announced Wednesday (Nov. 5).The position was vacated by James Almond, who began his role as interim executive vice president for business and finance and treasurer on Nov. 1 after Morgan R. Olsen left the position to become the chief financial officer at Arizona State University. Shipley's appointment is effective immediately. Shipley has been a member of the Purdue staff since 1984 and has been comptroller since 1998. He has served as academic business administrator for the Department of Chemistry, manager for federal costing studies, and assistant comptroller for costing and risk management. "John has 24 years of experience at Purdue, performing several different business and administrative duties of increasing responsibility leading up to this," Almond said. "He will help ensure that business services will continue seamlessly as we transition. His university experience will be invaluable as he assumes his new interim role." The vice president for business and assistant treasurer oversees budget and fiscal planning, school and departmental business affairs, the comptroller's area, administration of sponsored program services, human resource services, businesses services computing, and procurement. As comptroller, Shipley's responsibilities have included directing the administrative and operational activities in the collection and disbursement of funds and recording all university financial transactions; establishing and monitoring procedures for keeping financial records; establishing and monitoring procedures to ensure proper controls on university financial transactions; managing compliance with state and federal tax laws; maintaining risk management procedures; and providing oversight and direction to the business operations of Purdue Physical Facilities and Housing and Food Services.
