Expert to discuss energy issues

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Philip J. Smith, director of The Institute for Clean & Secure Energy at the University of Utah, will discuss the future of coal, oil shale and oil sands in a lecture Thursday, Oct. 30.

The center is a $7 million-a-year research program focused on technical, environmental and policy issues related to the three hydrocarbon resources. Smith will talk about the institute's multidisciplinary research aimed at quantified forecasting and associated policy decisions.

The talk will be 3:30-4:30 p.m. in Room G140 of Forney Hall of Chemical Engineering. A reception will begin at 3 p.m. in Henson Atrium of Forney Hall.

"Responsible use of coal is in the interest of a smoother transition to a sustainable energy future.  The University of Utah is one of the few U.S. institutions with an active coal research program," said Jay Gore, director of the Discovery Park Energy Center.

The Energy Center is sponsoring the talk in collaboration with the Center for Coal Technology Research, Department of Chemistry, Schools of Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, and e-Enterprise Center.
