Application deadline set for Humanigration trip

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University's Latino Cultural Center is now taking applications for its second annual Humanigration: A Border Experience educational trip March 15-21 to Arizona and the U.S.-Mexico border to examine immigration issues more intimately.

The deadline for applications is Nov. 19. The Humanigration trip was created to immerse participants in the immigrant experience and to develop a perspective on immigration and other issues such as globalization, said Maricela Alvarado, director of the Latino Cultural Center.

"Immigration is a controversial topic in politics, economics language and education," Alvarado said. "With this trip, the LCC strives to provide a more basic human understanding of the immigrant experience on both sides of the Mexican-U.S. border."

Alvarado and others who made the first Humanigration trip in May will talk about their experiences during a YWCA Network Luncheon on Monday (Oct. 13) at the YWCA, 605 N. Sixth St. in Lafayette, and during the Purdue Galleries Humanigration exhibition at 6 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Purdue Memorial Union's West Faculty Lounge.

The Latino Cultural Center is working with BorderLinks, a bi-national non-profit organization in Tucson that offers experiential educational seminars focusing on immigration and global economics.

"It's important to bring back the human aspect of the debate," said Gilberto Corral, the center's program director. "It's good to let students and community members see the people who are living these issues instead of through the media and political pundits."

Participants will meet with U.S. and Mexico border officials as well as representatives of Humane Borders; stay in a squatter's village in Nogales, Mexico; and perform volunteer service and community organizing work.
