Purdue sorority, fraternity community to sponsor awareness events

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue's Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association will partner with the Women's Resource Office to sponsor several events Oct. 6-10 to commemorate National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.

All events are free and open to the public.

The Interfraternity Council will sponsor These Hands are Not for Hurting from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 6-7) outside of the Class of 1950 Lecture Hall. The group will have a booth set up where individuals can outline their own hands to signify their support.

The Take Back the Night rally will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 8) in the Materials and Electrical Engineering Building lobby. Several speakers will talk and then the group will march to Slayter Center of Performing Arts. At this year's event, members of the Interfraternity Council will complete the walk in high heels to show their support for the cause.

Beginning Tuesday (Oct. 7), Alpha Chi Omega will sponsor the Clothesline Project through the end of the week in the Purdue Memorial Union east and west main lounges. The display features T-shirts decorated by survivors, their family and friends, and others who want to promote awareness of domestic violence.

Other sponsors of Domestic Violence Awareness events include the Purdue Organization for Women's Equality and Rights, the YWCA Domestic Violence Intervention and Prevention Program, Office of the Dean of Students, Student Wellness Office, Office of the Vice President for Human Relations and the Purdue Police Department.
