October 1, 2008 Annual symposium to focus on counterfeit medications issuesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue's School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy will sponsor a symposium Oct. 23 that will address the problem of counterfeit medications.The Sixth Annual Garnet E. Peck Symposium will be from 1-6:15 p.m. in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall. Registration for the symposium is free, and it is open to the public. The event is funded by an educational grant from Eli Lilly and Co. Topics and speakers will include "The Global Challenge of Counterfeit Medications," Michael Muller, director of global anti-counterfeiting strategy at Eli Lilly and Co.; "Analytical Testing Challenges in Detecting Counterfeit Medications," Jacqueline Larew, director of global quality lab operations, Eli Lilly and Co.; "Analytical Techniques to Detect Counterfeit Dosage Form Drugs," Fred L. Fricke, director of the FDA Forensic Chemistry Center; "Securing the Integrity of the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain," Heather Zenk, director of Integrated Solutions, AmerisourceBergen; "Packaging Targeted Anti-Counterfeiting Strategies: A Key Component of Pfizer's Patient Safety Strategy," Rich Hollander, senior director of packaging services, Pfizer Inc.; and a panel discussion, "Research Needs for Addressing the Problem of Counterfeit Medications," moderated by Maria D. Bowman-Horner, manager of Consumer Product QA-Q Systems & Performance Improvement, Eli Lilly and Co. After the symposium, the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences will announce a request for proposals to provide seed funding for innovative projects addressing the subject of counterfeit medications.
