Students to compete in rocket launching

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Fifteen teams of Purdue University students will participate in a rocket launching contest Sunday (Oct. 5).

The competition, sponsored by the Aeronautics and Astronautics "rocket propulsion" class, will start at 10 a.m. at Purdue's Animal Sciences Research Center. From Lafayette, take U.S. 52 north to a right on U.S. 231 to a right on County Road 600 North. The event is free and open to the public. Those attending are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets.

The students will predict altitude, hang time and distance from the launch pad. The team whose actual flight comes closest to those predictions will win.

Experimental rockets designed, built and flown by local enthusiasts will be on display.  After the competition, high-power model rockets will be launched.
