October 1, 2008 Purdue mechanical engineering to honor 5 alumniWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University's School of Mechanical Engineering will honor five alumni this week.The five will receive the Outstanding Mechanical Engineer award at a ceremony at 7:15 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 2) at University Plaza. "Our honorees have demonstrated leadership in industry, academia and government service," said E. Dan Hirleman, William E. and Florence E. Perry Head of Mechanical Engineering. "They also lend their time and talents to their communities." The award has been presented since 1991 to 201 alumni. This year's recipients are: * Campbell D. Carter, Dayton, Ohio, who earned a doctorate in 1990. He is principal aerospace engineer at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory's Propulsion Directorate in the Aerospace Propulsion Division. His focus has been on advanced laser diagnostic techniques to further development of high-speed, air-breathing propulsion technologies. He has been with the division since 2002. * Billy M. Glover Jr., Renton, Wash., who earned a bachelor's degree in 1976 and a master's in 1978. He is managing director of environmental strategy for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, where he leads an enterprise-wide team responsible for developing and implementing Boeing's global environmental strategy. He previously held assignments with Boeing involving 707, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777 and 787 airplanes. * Jill M. Hruby, Livermore, Calif., who earned a bachelor's degree in 1981. She is director of homeland security programs for Sandia National Laboratories and manages its Center for Homeland Security and Defense Systems. She oversees activities from research to systems engineering to help anticipate, prevent, respond and recover from terrorist attacks or natural disasters. She has been with Sandia for 25 years. * Sung Jim Kim, Yeong-tong-gu, South Korea, who earned a doctorate in 1992. He is vice president for Samsung Electronics' Digital Appliance Business research and development team. He earlier worked for LG Electronics and General Electric. He has seven South Korean patents for advancements in quieting home appliances, such as vacuum cleaners and washing machines. * Kevin B. Smith, Wilmette, Ill., who earned a bachelor's degree in 1979. He is chief operating officer of SolarReserve, a developer of utility-scale solar energy power projects. Previously he was with Invenergy.
