October 1, 2008 Purdue information technology to mark Cybersecurity Awareness Month with seriesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Office of Information Technology at Purdue's IT networks and security unit will present a series of four lectures in October to help increase cybersecurity awareness.The "Cyber Security: Your Ticket to Digital Self Defense," series lectures are scheduled for 9-11 a.m. Wednesdays (Oct. 8, 15 and 22) and Friday, Oct. 31, in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall, as Information Technology at Purdue participates in the third annual National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and National Cyber Security Alliance spearhead the annual effort. Free and open to the public, the lectures include: * Oct. 8 - "Buckle Up! Laptop Security:" Scott Ksander, Purdue's chief information security officer and executive director of networks and security, is the presenter. * Oct. 15 - "PDAs: Pretty Darn Accessible Without Security:" The same threats that affect desktop users are starting to affect PDAs. * Oct 22 - "Phones and Tech Toys: Who Can Hear Me Now?" This will cover trends and what technology we will see next year. Presenters Aaron Jarvis, network engineer with Information Technology at Purdue, and a Verizon representative will present how to protect yourself. * Oct. 31 - Special security guest speaker and traditional security: Chris Kenworthy, McAfee senior vice president for Worldwide Enterprise Business, will speak. A "Security Halloween" contest also will be part of the final lecture on Oct. 31.
