Nationally known ethnic studies historian and educator Ronald Takaki will be the keynote speaker for Latino Heritage Month at 7 p.m. Oct. 7 in Purdue University's Stewart Center.

Takaki, professor emeritus of ethnic studies at the University of California, Berkeley, will speak in Fowler Hall. He has written and researched extensively on the roles ethnicity and multiculturalism have played in American society and education. The event is a part of the Latino Cultural Center's celebration of Latino Heritage Month, which has examined the connection between the Latino and Asian cultures.

The event is co-sponsored by the College of Education as part of its celebration of 100 years of teacher education at Purdue.

Takaki has written 12 books, and his book "A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America" is used as a text for ethnic studies courses across the country. An updated version of the book will be published in December, said Maricela Alvarado, director of the Latino Cultural Center.

Sidney Moon, an associate dean with the College of Education, said much of Takaki's research and work is now the standard for multicultural education in the country and he is a leader in the field.

Along with the Latino Cultural Center and the College of Education, other sponsors include the Office of the Provost/Mosaic Plan, American Studies program, Black Cultural Center and the Diversity Resource Office/DiversiKey program.

The Latino Cultural Center was established in 2003 as Purdue's first center for Hispanic and Latino culture. The organization is a gathering place where people of similar cultures and backgrounds can come together to share events in the university community.
