Purdue students earn predoctoral training awards

The program, along with postdoctoral awards, will provide more than $1 million to support research training and career development of young scientists.

The 2008 recipients were:

- Stephanie Colvin, IUPUI biology and Purdue's College of Science, who is investigating pediatric diseases associated with impaired pituitary development, using mouse models as well as testing candidate genes in children.

- Marie Fialkowski, Purdue's Department of Foods and Nutrition, who is using a multidimensional approach to dietary assessment in disadvantaged populations with the aim of improving nutrition-related health disparities.

- Travis Hassell, Purdue's School of Biomedical Engineering and IU School of Medicine, whose research focuses on the use of applied electrical fields to stimulate new neuronal growth with ultimate applications to spinal cord injury.

- Marybeth Miskovic, Purdue's School of Veterinary Medicine, whose research on recurrent airway obstruction (heaves) in horses, is also serving as a model for better understanding the mechanisms of asthma in humans.

- Paul Niziolek, Purdue's School of Biomedical Engineering and IU School of Medicine, who is studying signaling pathways in mouse models that affect bone loss with implications for improving success rates in orthopedic implants.

- Todd Ricket, Purdue's School of Biomedical Engineering and IU School of Medicine, who is developing nerve guidance conduits in animal models with an ultimate aim of facilitating nerve regeneration in spinal cord injury.
