Brasil Guitar Duo to bring classic repertoire, Brazilian rhythms to Purdue stage

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Brasil Guitar Duo, winners of the 2006 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, will perform classical guitar duets and music of their native land in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16 in Loeb Playhouse of Purdue Stewart Center.

Due to demand, the performance, which is presented by Purdue Convocations as part of its Classics series, has been moved to Loeb Playhouse from Fowler Hall, where it was originally planned, said Abby Eddy, director of marketing for Purdue Convocations.

João Luiz and Douglas Lora met as teenage guitar students in São Paulo, Brazil, a little more than a decade ago. Today, with full touring schedules on two continents and critically acclaimed recordings, the duo is quickly solidifying its status as one of the pre-eminent guitar duos of its generation, Eddy said.

In 2000, their debut recording, "João Luiz e Douglas Lora," was released to wide critical acclaim. Their latest project involved recording the complete works for two guitars by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco for the Naxos label, which is due for release this fall to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the composer's death.

Tickets for the Purdue performance are $12 for adults and children 18 years and younger, Purdue students and Ivy Tech Lafayette students. Tickets are available at the Elliott Hall and Stewart Center box offices at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. Tickets are also available through Ticketmaster outlets. Discounted tickets for groups of 10 or more can be ordered at (765) 496-1977.
