Historian talks pop culture, WWII during Experience Liberal Arts

A Purdue University historian will talk about how comic book hero Superman, actor John Wayne and boxer Joe Louis relate to World War II.

Randy Roberts, distinguished professor of history, will present "Popular Culture and WWII" from 3:30-5 p.m. Oct. 7 in Stewart Center, Room 202. The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Department of History and Experience Liberal Arts, a monthlong celebration highlighting the College of Liberal Arts.

Randy Roberts has published 13 books on history and sports. His subjects have included Jack Johnson, John Wayne, Mike Tyson, Jack Dempsey, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Boston sports, the Vietnam War, Charles Lindbergh and the Alamo. He also has published works on film director Oliver Stone, American presidents, Sherlock Holmes, women's sports, and the politics and economics of televised boxing.

October's Experience Liberal Arts will feature a variety of lectures, films, performances, events and exhibits that reflect the college's ongoing coursework and research in the arts, humanities, social and behavioral sciences.
