Appointments, honors and activities

• Appointments and promotions:

— Janelle Musch has accepted a position in the College of Science as director of alumni relations and special events.

— Sally Lutes is the new director of development for WBAA Radio. A Purdue graduate, Lutes most recently worked as director of development for the Montessori School of Greater Lafayette.

— Sam Genson is the new associate director of special events. A graduate of Western Michigan University, he previously worked as a legislative assistant for the American Academy of Actuaries in Washington, D.C.

—Kathryn Kester is the new communications coordinator I for Purdue Marketing Communications. Kester, a graduate of Purdue Calumet, previously served as a development and public relations manager for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Porter County Convention and Visitor Commission.

— Bob Grewe, Dubois County Area Development Corp. president, has been appointed to the Manufacturing Extension Partnership advisory council. The council provides views on the local or regional conditions that affect manufacturing. It also guides the strategic services the partnership provides manufacturers. Purdue's Technical Assistance Program administers the Manufacturing Extension Partnership. Grewe, referred by MEP director L. David Snow as "an economic brain trust in southwest Indiana," will serve a three-year term.

 

• Campus activities:

— Twenty-eight high school bands from across the state will participate in Purdue's "All-American" High School Band Day on Saturday (Sept. 20) during the Purdue vs. Central Michigan football game. The bands will join Purdue's marching band for a halftime show. Band Day participants include Attica High School; South Adams High School in Berne; Bloomfield High School; Bremen High School; West Washington High School in Campbellsburg; Churubusco High School; Crown Point High School; Culver Community High School; Delphi Community High School; Frankfort High School; Cathedral High School in Indianapolis; Faith Christian and McCutcheon high schools in Lafayette; Lebanon High School; Marion High School; Turkey Run High School in Marshall; Riverton Parke High School in Montezuma; Benton Central High School in Oxford; Peru High School; Rochester High School; Tipton High School; Boone Grove, Wheeler and Washington/Morgan Township high schools in Valparaiso; William Henry Harrison and West Lafayette high schools in West Lafayette; Seeger High School in West Lebanon; and Kankakee Valley High School in Wheatfield.

— Purdue's Art of Living student organization will teach a six-day youth empowerment seminar Sept. 23-28. The course will teach breathing techniques and other ways to relieve stress, anxiety, and harmonize and energize the body and mind. Anyone interested can attend a free introductory workshop about the course, which will be offered at 3 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 20) in Stewart Center, Room 206, or at 6:30 p.m. Monday (Sept. 22) in University Hall, Room 101. The seminar will take place from 6-10 p.m. Sept. 23-26 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 27 and 28. Registration for the six-day course is $250, which also covers weekly follow-up sessions. The group also is offering a free yoga session at 6 p.m. Friday (Sept. 19) in Stewart Center, Room 202. Throughout the world, more than 20 million people in more than 140 countries have benefited from Art of Living's programs on yoga, meditation and stress elimination. — The Crossroads Conference on Communicative Disorders, which is open to professionals in speech, language and hearing sciences, is Oct. 27 and 28 in Stewart Center. The registration fee for the two-day conference is $200; one-day registration is $125; and the student fee is $25. Continuing education credits are offered for participation in this conference. This event is sponsored by the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, and is part of Experience Liberal Arts, which is a monthlong celebration highlighting the College of Liberal Arts.

 

• Faculty and staff honors:

— Cliff Wojtalewicz, associate managing director for Purdue's e-Enterprise Center, has received the Distinguished Hoosier Award for leadership in homeland security and emergency preparedness issues as deputy director of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. State Sen. Thomas Wyss of Fort Wayne presented the award, one of Indiana's highest honors, on behalf of Gov. Mitch Daniels during a recent ceremony at Purdue's Discovery Park complex. Wojtalewicz served as deputy director and planning division director for the Indiana Homeland Security Department from April 2005 to April 2008. A 20-year veteran of the U.S. Army Signal Corps and decorated veteran of the Persian Gulf War, Wojtalewicz also spent four years as a Purdue professor of military science before retiring as lieutenant colonel in 2004.

• Student honors:

— Purdue's Zeta Alpha Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, a professional business and financial information fraternity, has been named a distinguished chapter for the 2007-08 by the national organization. Purdue's chapter was honored for excelling in the areas of academics, professionalism and leadership.
