The host of a National Public Radio weekly health show will give two talks on Oct. 17, including one at Purdue University, and lead a community walk on Oct. 18 as part of Experience Liberal Arts.

Dr. Zorba Paster, host of "On Your Health," will present "The Four Pillars of Perfect Health: How to Live Your Personal Best" at 1:30 p.m. in the Purdue Memorial Union's East Faculty Lounge. He also will present "How to Live a Long, Sweet Life" at 7 p.m. at Duncan Hall, 619 Ferry St. in Lafayette. In addition to the talk, student members from the Food and Nutrition Society will be cooking and serving a couple of Paster's recipes. Reservations are required for the Duncan Hall talk by Oct. 10 by calling (765) 496-1015.

The community is invited to participate in "Just Walk for the Health of It," half-mile and two-mile walks that Paster will lead at 10 a.m. on Oct. 18 at the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds. All events are free and open to the public.

Paster, who has been featured on National Public Radio for 10 years, is a family physician and clinical professor of family medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He also is the author of "The Longevity Code: Your Personal Prescription for a Longer, Sweeter Life."

"Dr. Paster is especially well-known for his efforts to integrate Western medicine with Eastern wisdom," says William Harper, professor and head of the Department of Health and Kinesiology. "Listeners can tune in every Saturday to hear his humorous and enthusiastic show about living a healthy life. He has something to say that will appeal to everyone."

The events are sponsored by Experience Liberal Arts, a monthlong celebration highlighting programs in the College of Liberal Arts, as well as the Coalition for Living Well After 50, the Community Health Collaborative of the Lafayette/West Lafayette Economic Development Corp., YMCA Activate America, Purdue Extension Tippecanoe County, INShape Indiana, Area IV Agency on Aging, Arnett Foundation and Community Action Programs.

The Coalition for Living Well After 50, which has been working for more than five years to assess the community's fitness needs and establish local partnerships between businesses and organizations, was created by Purdue researchers.

"By partnering with a variety of organizations in the community, we are taking a hands-on approach to promoting health and fighting chronic disease by improving the utilization of local resources," says Roseann Lyle, professor of health and kinesiology and one of the coalition's creators. "Thanks to the community support, the coalition provides all older adults with the opportunity, support and environment to assist them in leading healthy, productive and more enjoyable lives. Just Walk for the Health of It is another way we are encouraging people of all ages to be active."

October's Experience Liberal Arts will feature a variety of lectures, films, performances, events and exhibits that reflect the college's ongoing coursework and research in the arts, humanities, social and behavioral sciences.
