Dinner at Purdue to bring community together for scholarships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Regional and state officials and the Indianapolis Mexican Consul will participate in the inaugural Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month dinner and dance at the Purdue Memorial Union's North and South ballrooms at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 21.

The event, which raises scholarship funds for students who provide service to the Hispanic/Latino community, is a collaboration of the United Businesses Serving Community organization and the Purdue Latino Cultural Center. The event is open to the public.

Expected guests include Purdue President France A. Córdova; Lake County Circuit Court Judge Lorenzo Arredondo; Juana Watson, senior adviser for Latino Affairs in the office of the governor; and Indianapolis Mexican Consul Juan M. Solana. Arredondo is the first Latino judge elected in Indiana, organizers said. Purdue's Latin Ballroom Club and Salsa Club will present dance demonstrations during the event.

"This event is a great way to enhance community, educational and business relationships with the Latino community," said Maricela Alvarado, director of the Latino Cultural Center. "As the Latino community grows in Tippecanoe County, United Businesses Serving the Community and the Latino Cultural Center can play an important role in bridging relationships with businesses and community initiatives."

Sponsors and partners include Ivy Tech Community College, Del Real Auto Sales, Purdue Employee Federal Credit Union, El Chicano restaurant, Jalisco Grocery, TK Lawn Care, Aspen Dental Group, Las Olas restaurant, Garcia Insurance, Floors Unlimited, Wal-Mart and Huntington Bank.

United Businesses Serving the Community is a Lafayette-based organization that provides services and support for Latino families focusing on community education, public advocacy and cultural endorsement.

The Latino Cultural Center was established in 2003 as Purdue's first center for Hispanic and Latino culture. The organization is a gathering place where people of similar cultures and backgrounds can come together to share events in the university community.
