Green Week sustainability tips to be available at Web site

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University's Sustainability Council is putting together a series of Green Week (Sept. 15-19) tips to help students, faculty and staff make the campus more sustainable.

The tips will appear online at www.purdue.edu/green.

"We're in the process of coming up with 20 tips a day for Green Week. Each day has a theme, and the tips will relate to the theme for that day," says Robin Ridgway, of the radiological and environmental management office and co-chair of the Sustainability Council.

"We're trying to come up with ideas to help make Purdue a greener place. Some of the things I'm looking for are Purdue-targeted. For example, if you walk by a facilities services closet and the faucet is running, or a faucet is leaking in a restroom, report it to the building deputy so it will get repaired."

The idea, Ridgway says, is to make people more aware of what they can do as individuals to help the environment.

"Purdue can do a lot of things, but the university's success also comes down to personal actions," she says. "We're trying to make people think about their activities at Purdue and what they can do to make Purdue more sustainable. Hopefully, they'll also use the tips to guide their choices when they are away from Purdue."

Ridgway says she also wants the tips area of the Web site to provide information on what students, faculty or employees can do if they have an idea for a "green" initiative in their building or area.

Green Week is being organized by the College of Engineering, including its Division of Environmental and Ecological Engineering, Global Engineering Program, as well as the School of Mechanical Engineering, the Center for the Environment, Energy Center, Office of the Provost and the Purdue Climate Change Research Center.
