Fall forum to feature international films

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University's Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is showing films from Germany, Morocco and the Caribbean during the 2008 World Film Forum, a monthly fall series.

The forums will take place Sept. 10, Oct. 22 and Nov. 12, and all the films, which are free and open to the public, have English subtitles. Purdue professors will introduce the films and lead a discussion after them, said Silvia Oliveira, event organizer and an assistant professor of Portuguese and Spanish.

All three events will take place at 5 p.m. at the West Lafayette Public Library, 208 W.  Columbia St. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided, and people can enter their names in a drawing for a DVD at each film presentation.

The movies and speakers are:

* Sept. 10 - Jennifer William, an associate professor of German, will present "Goodbye Lenin" (2003). This film, directed by Wolfgang Becker, is the recipient of numerous international film awards and was nominated for a Golden Globe. The story is about an East Germany supporter who falls into a coma, then awakens after the Berlin Wall comes down.

* Oct. 22 - Ahmed Idrissi Alami, an assistant professor of Arabic, will present "A Door to the Sky" (1989). This film, directed by Farida Ben Lyzaid, tells the story of a woman returning to North Africa because of her father's death, then she is inspired to turn her father's palace into a Muslim women's shelter. This film is part of Experience Liberal Arts, a monthlong celebration highlighting programs in the College of Liberal Arts.

* Nov. 12 - Nadége Veldwachter, an assistant professor of French and Francophone literature, will present "Sugar Cane Alley" (1983). This film, directed by Euzhan Palcy, is the winner of the 1983 Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The Martinique film tells the story of an aspiring child writer who fights an oppressive educational system.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is housed in the College of Liberal Arts.

October's Experience Liberal Arts will feature a variety of lectures, films, performances, events and exhibits that reflect the college's ongoing coursework and research in the arts, humanities, social and behavioral sciences.
