Seminar features history prof who can talk about Russia, Georgia

Michael Smith, an associate professor of history and an expert on Russian history, will present "A New Cold War? America, Russia and the Georgia Crisis" at 7 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 206. The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Office of International Programs and the Department of History.

"The Global Perspectives series is designed to bring current events to the Purdue campus community," says Andrew Gillespie, associate dean of international programs. "Professor Smith will talk about the history of Russia, Georgia and other nations in the former Soviet Union, as well as the Cold War and current U.S. policy toward the situation."

Smith's research interests are in Soviet nationalities and language policies, as well as the American and Russian relations in the Cold War. He teaches courses on "Modern Russian History" and his lived and traveled in Russia and the Caucasus.
