Purdue University experts to speak at Farm World Expo

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University animal behavior and welfare scientist Ed Pajor will discuss where the animal industry is headed as part of the Farm World Expo, which will be Sept. 4-6 at the Boone County Fairgrounds in Lebanon, Ind.

"The issue of animal welfare and well-being reflects a change in the concern that society has about animals and where their food comes from," Pajor said. "And it's an issue that needs to be taken seriously because it has serious implications."

Pajor will speak at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sept. 5.

Pajor won't be the only Purdue expert present. Ag economist Chris Hurt will give a sunrise crop outlook update and what this means for farmers at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 4 and 5. Chad Martin, Purdue Extension renewable energy specialist, will discuss wind opportunities in Indiana at 9:40 a.m., 11:40 a.m. and 1:40 p.m. on Sept. 6. Martin, Hurt and Pajor can all be found on the Stars of the Farm World Stage in the Rabbit and Poultry Building.

There is no entry fee or parking cost for visitors. The expo will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 4 and Sept. 6, and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 5.

Exhibitors from Purdue include Ag Answers and the Department of Agricultural Economics.

Gerry Harrison, Purdue ag law specialist, will be available to answer questions about estate planning, federal tax law and property law topics that relate to Indiana farmers and agribusinesses. Julie Douglas, Ag Answers editor and writer, will be available to answer questions about Ag Answers and sign up visitors. Ag Answers, an online production ag news service that connects farmers and agribusiness owners and managers with the latest information from experts at Purdue and Ohio State University, will be located in the Commercial Building.

Each day of the expo has a theme: Thursday is AgriSource Commodities Day, Friday is 3-A-Day of Dairy Fuels Nutrition and Health Day, and Saturday is CountryMark Renewable Fuels Day.

"There is something for everyone," said Emily Myers, sponsorships and marketing manager for the Farm World Expo. "We've got everything from a Kiddie Tractor Pull and a petting zoo to a 4-H and FFA livestock judging contest and from cooking demonstrations to bloodhound search and rescue and pet training demonstrations."
