The Jiangsu Silk & Bamboo Performing Group is performing at Purdue University on Sept. 13.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is 2-3:30 p.m. in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. Doors open at 1:45 p.m. The event is sponsored by Confucius Institutes at Purdue and Valparaiso University.

The 25-member group includes 13 instrumentalists, two vocalists, two dancers, two acrobats and three Beijing Opera actors and actress, and one puppet show actress. The artists will present traditional Chinese instrumental and vocal music, folk dance, magic face-changing, puppet shows and excerpts from famous Beijing Opera classics.

"All the artists have toured extensively in and outside China and performed at many famous venues around the world," says Wei Hong, a professor of Chinese and director of Purdue's Confucius Institute. "Jiangsu Performing Arts Company is one of the largest performing companies of China."

Jiangsu Province is located northwest of Shanghai in the lower valley of Yangtze River.

"With its long history and unique culture, the provincial capital Nanjing used to serve as China's capital," Hong says. "Jiangsu Province also enjoys a highly developed economy with its gross domestic product ranked No. 1 among all the provinces of China. Purdue has had a long and very productive relationship with the universities and cultural institutions in Jiangsu and Nanjing including our hospitality, tourism and management student exchanges and internship programs.

"The upcoming visit and performance by the artists of Jiangsu Silk & Bamboo Performing Group at Purdue celebrates the existing cultural and academic ties between Purdue and Jiangsu Province."

Other Purdue support for this event is from the Mosaic program in the Provost's Office, the College of Liberal Arts, China Center and the College of Consumer and Family Sciences. The Purdue performance is one of many performances for the group that is touring Midwest Confucius Institutes. The tour is called the Great Lakes Confucius Institute Music Festival.

The Confucius Institute at Purdue is a collaboration among the colleges of Liberal Arts, Engineering and the Krannert School of Management, as well as Shanghai Jiaotong University in Shanghai, China. One-hundred forty Confucius institutes worldwide are sponsored by the Chinese Language Council International to develop relationships and understanding between countries.
