Middle East water experts to speak at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Two researchers from the Middle East will speak about vital water issues in that region of the world during a talk from 9:30-11 a.m. on Friday (Aug. 22) at Purdue University.

The talk, "Transboundary Water Issues in the Middle East: A Perspective," will be presented in the Mechanical Engineering Building, Room 255, and is part of the Global Engineering Program Seminar Series at Purdue.

"The management of water and policy implications can be a challenge in areas of conflict and shared water resources, such as the Middle East, which have so-called transboundary water resources," said Rabi Mohtar, director of the Global Engineering Program and a Purdue professor of agricultural and biological engineering. "A large portion of the globe has been experiencing a critical water deficit that has implications on sustainable development. Engineering can provide society with the knowledge and tools to help manage this critical resource, which has been threatened worldwide by human activities both in terms of quantity and quality."

Speaking will be Abdel Rahman Tamimi, an internationally known hydrologist and director general of the Palestinian Hydrology Group, an environmental organization; and Mohammed Salahat, a hydrologist at Hashemite University in Jordan and a pioneer in integrating soil science and hydrology. He is a Purdue alumnus.
