Purdue University on Wednesday (July 30) announced the appointment of Wei Zheng as head of the School of Health Sciences and associate dean in the College of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences.

The appointment is effective Sept. 1, said Craig Svensson, dean of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences.

Zheng has been a faculty member in the School of Health Sciences since 2003 and is currently professor of toxicology and director of graduate studies. Prior to his hiring at Purdue, Zheng was a faculty member from 1993-2003 at Columbia University. His research focuses on the neurotoxicity of heavy metals and the regulation of the blood-brain barrier. His current work is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, and pharmaceutical industry.

The Chinese Preventive Medicine Association awarded Zheng the third-place science and technology award for research achievement, and he was an invited speaker of President George Bush at the China-U.S. Relations Conference in 2007.

Zheng succeeds George Sandison, who will become clinical director of medical physics at the University of Washington.

The School of Health Sciences was formed in 1979 and includes programs concerned with improving public health and the environment in which we work and live. Initiated with a concentration in radiological sciences, the school has since expanded to develop specialists in ergonomics, health physics and industrial hygiene. The school has 651 undergraduates and 37 graduate students.
