The conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Rossville High School. Topics include an air quality study update from the Environmental Protection Agency, how to incorporate dried distillers grains, a regulatory update and information about the new concentrated animal feeding operation rule, improving reproductive efficiency, manure utilization, and employee relations and training. JAN. 24: HORTICULTURE MANAGING FOR SUCCESS Purdue Extension will host the second session of a four-part series called Horticulture Managing for Success at Pinney-Purdue Agricultural Center in LaPorte, Ind. The sessions, which are designed for horticulture business owners and managers, will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. CST. This session will have topics that include how to solve business problems, the influences of trends and globalization on horticulture, and how to control a business. JAN. 28-30: INDIANA HORTICULTURE CONGRESS The 2008 Indiana Horticulture Congress will take place Jan. 28-30 at the Adams Mark Hotel in Indianapolis and cover agritourism, human resources, organics, wine grapes, farmers' market, botanicals, fruit, raw products and vegetables. Some of the topics that will be presented are on food safety, grants and funding sources for farmers' markets; preparing your farm for educational tours; designing and planning an organic system; and how to understand vendor pricing. JAN. 29: BI-STATE LOW MAINTENANCE LANDSCAPING WORKSHOP The Purdue and University of Illinois Extension Services will sponsor the Low Maintenance Landscaping workshop from 6:30-9 p.m. at The Beef House in Covington, Ind. The workshop will include a meal, landscaping with low maintenance plants by Mark Davidson of Davidson Greenhouse, and using native prairie plants for reducing your gardening time by outdoor writer Don Bickell of Conservationist. FEB. 2: PURDUE AGRICULTURE FISH FRY The Purdue College of Agriculture will host its annual Fish Fry at 11:30 a.m. in the Toyota Blue Ribbon Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairground in Indianapolis. The doors will open for the Fish Fry at 10:30 a.m. The featured speaker will be Andrew Card, White House Chief of Staff from 2001 to 2006. Card will speak about management strategies during crisis and times of rapid change. Registration is advanced sales only and is $20. FEB. 4: NORTHERN INDIANA SOIL MANAGEMENT SEMINAR The Northern Indiana Soil Management Seminar will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Martin Room of the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds in Goshen, Ind. Topics will include soil properties and tips for maximizing soil fertility, the latest information related to manure/nutrient management planning and implementation, and an overview of methods for identifying pest infestations. Private applicator credits are available with a $10 fee and are approved for continuing education units and certification credit hours for certified crop advisers and commercial pesticide applicators. FEB. 6: BIGGER PROFITS THROUGH TARGETED SALES WORKSHOP The Purdue New Ventures Team will hold the Bigger Profits through Targeted Sales workshop from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. CST at the Sand Creek Country Club in Chesterton, Ind. The workshop will include small group discussions, a presentation of the marketing action plan and sales strategy, and a business networking session. Some of the topics that will be covered during the workshop are defining and positioning a product or service in the marketplace, analyzing the competition, and creating a differential advantage and capitalizing on opportunities for promotions and public relations. FEB. 9: SHRIMP CONFERENCE FOR INDIANA RURAL LANDOWNERS Purdue Extension Office in Morgan County will sponsor the Shrimp Conference for Indiana Rural Landowners from 8:30 a.m. until the mid-afternoon in Martinsville, Ind. This conference presents a new business and alternative agriculture opportunity for landowners. The conference will include two technical experts giving presentations, a visit to a nearby shrimp farm, a panel discussion, a professional video on the total spectrum of shrimp farming and a review of a shrimp farming workbook. FEB. 20-21: MIDWEST WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE CONFERENCE The 2008 Midwest Women in Agriculture conference will be at the Holiday Inn in Columbus, Ind. The conference is designed to cater to women by addressing the personal, family and farm issues that affect their lives, families and farm businesses. The two featured presenters will be Loren Burkhart and Damian Mason. Attendees may participate in either day, or both. Those who register early (before Feb. 1) may attend for $65 per day or $75 for both days. After Feb. 1, registration will be $100 per day or $125 for both days. FEB. 22: AQUACULTURE FINANCING WORKSHOP The Indiana Soybean Alliance and Purdue Extension are co-sponsoring the free Aquaculture Financing workshop from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 9 a.m. The workshop will be at the Sheraton Indianapolis Hotel and Suites at 8787 Keystone Crossing. There will be public and private industry partners to provide participants with information on how to obtain financial assistance for starting or expanding an aquaculture facility. Topics will include the current state of Indiana's aquaculture industry, tips for sourcing and writing grants, financing fish farms with bank loans, insurance, and how to convert a hog building to an aquaculture facility. FEB. 26: BEGINNING BEEKEEPING SERIES Purdue Extension will hold the second session of the 2008 Beginning Beekeeping Series from 6:30-9:30 p.m. through IP videos from Extension offices. The series will introduce new beekeepers to the skills needed to successfully work with and keep bees. This workshop will teach about parts of the hive, buying equipments, bee space, sitting the hive, and hive construction and maintenance.
