Purdue Provost will present at the Indiana Building Awareness for Science Education symposium

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - State and national leaders will focus on the role of science, technology, engineering and mathematics education in preparing students for the future workplace and positioning the state as a leader in the global economy at the Indiana Building Awareness for Science Education Symposium on Friday (April 25).

The symposium, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Conrad Hilton in Indianapolis, will feature Purdue University Interim Provost Victor Lechtenberg, Indiana Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman and Executive Director of the national Science Resources Center Sally Goetz Shuler.

Skillman will present opening remarks via video at 8 a.m. In addition, William Walker, executive director for the I-STEM Resource Network and Director for College of Science K-12 Outreach at Purdue, will provide remarks.

Lechtenberg and Shuler will present "What are the Issues in STEM Education in Indiana and the Nation" at 8:30 a.m.

More than 125 scientists, engineers, teachers, school administrators, representatives from higher education and elected officials will attend the symposium.

The Indiana Department of Education, the Indiana Governor’s Office, the Indiana Science Technology Engineering Mathematics Resource Network and the National Science Resources Council are sponsoring the event.

Through hands-on demonstrations and panel discussions, participants will learn about changes taking place in Indiana schools that will help the state compete in a global economy. Innovative efforts to position the state as a leader in STEM education and workforce development also will be discussed.
