Intersection reopens after gas leak forces closure

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The intersection of Stadium Avenue and University Street was closed for about one hour Thursday (April 24) morning after a backhoe operator hit a high-pressure gas line, causing a leak.

The incident happened around 7:45 a.m., according to Purdue fire chief Kevin Ply. The Purdue fire and police departments responded and closed the intersection. Vectren Corp. workers shut the gas off and are working to  repair the line. Purdue Utilities also was on scene and checked for gas in the utility tunnels.

The two-inch gas line that was hit feeds laboratories in Forney Hall of Chemical Engineering, the Physics Building, Civil Engineering Building and Materials and Electrical Engineering Building. Those laboratories remained opened. Purdue Utilities will coordinate turning the gas back on in the buildings.
