Black Caucus of Faculty, Staff academic and service awards program Saturday

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - More than 200 African-American undergraduate students will be honored for their academic achievements Saturday (April 12) at the Purdue Black Caucus of Faculty and Staff's 33rd annual Academic and Service Awards program.

The event begins at 10:30 a.m. in Purdue Memorial Union's North Ballroom.

All honorees will receive certificates and gifts.

One student will be given the Clara Bell Award, which is presented annually to the African-American student with the best academic record in nursing or health sciences. The award is dedicated to the memory of Clara Bell, who was a professor emeriti and former director of Continuing Education in Purdue's School of Nursing.

The caucus also will present service and leadership awards, which are determined by faculty and staff nominations.

A "Parent of the Year" and a "Department/Unit of the Year" also will be recognized, based on student nominations.

The keynote speaker at the event will be Randall J. Lewis, executive vice president and chief audit and compliance officer of WellPoint. Lewis earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and a Master of Business Administration degree in finance from Purdue. He serves on several boards, including the Purdue Research Foundation.

The awards program is the only one at Purdue sponsored directly by faculty and staff for students from all departments on campus.
